Ankle Injuries
We see and treat numerous ankle injures at ONE HEALTH in Port Macquarie. Below is a brief explanation of what occurs and what should be done to help in a faster recovery whilst preventing re-injury.
Ankle injuries are amongst the most common injuries that occur on both sport and daily activities. The most common of these injuries is usually an ankle sprain.
An ankle sprain involves damage to the ankle ligaments, typically sustained during simple sudden traumatic incidents, such as rolling or twisting the ankle. The ligaments on the outside of the ankle are much more susceptible to injury than the inside, and can produce pain, swelling, bruising and a sense of instability.
Prompt assessment, treatment & management is essential in the first 24 to 48 hours. This usually involves icing the injury whilst applying mild compression or elevation. Ice is particularly beneficial when applied as soon as possible immediately following the injury. A precautionary x-ray may neet to be taken to rule out a fracture.
At ONE HEALTH, we can assist in the treatment, management & rehabilitation of an ankle sprain with the following treatment options:
-
Interferrential &/or ultrasound therapy to promote faster healing and relief.
-
Soft tissue treatment of the ligament scar tissue to promote optimal stability and range of motion.
-
Mobility exercises to restore normal range of motion to the foot and ankle complex.
-
Balancing exercises to re-strengthen the proprioceptive receptors (sensory nerves) housed in the ligament that provide stability and improve position sense.
-
We can organise and assist with braces/strapping products if required for more vigorous exercise.
We may also consider any postural or stability issues related to the rest of your body. This may include:
-
Foot/ankle mechanics
-
Footwear
-
Joint restrictions and muscle tension in the lumbo-pelvic region and/or lower limb
-
